Pedro Martínez Wants Answers For Why Red Sox Moved On From Jason Varitek

The Boston Red Sox made some major coaching changes a couple of weeks ago, headlined by the firing of Alex Cora.

Pedro Martínez is speaking out, and Red Sox fans are listening. The Hall of Fame pitcher wants clarity on why Boston moved on from his longtime batterymate and close friend, Jason Varitek, during the team's recent coaching overhaul.

Two weeks ago, the Red Sox made headlines with sweeping coaching changes, most notably firing manager Alex Cora. In the shuffle, Varitek—the iconic catcher who worked with Martínez during all seven of his seasons in Boston—was reportedly removed from the big league staff. While the organization initially said "Tek" was reassigned to a different role, that explanation hasn't held up under scrutiny.

According to The Athletic's Jen McCaffrey, a league source confirmed Varitek was actually fired from his position as game-planning coordinator, not reassigned. The Red Sox have yet to clarify what role, if any, they offered him, stating only that details would be announced at a later date. For fans who remember Varitek's leadership behind the plate during those championship years, the lack of transparency stings.

Martínez, who was at Fenway Park on Friday, didn't hold back when asked about the situation. "They're going to let me know—there's got to be a reason, because Tek means so much to this city," he told reporters. "To me, Tek is a legend here. I'm not going to go into details because I don't know. If I knew, I'd tell you straight up. But it's very unfortunate that I don't get to see my batterymate out there, giving me a hug or probably receiving the baseball from me when I threw it today."

The uncertainty has left many wondering: Did Varitek refuse a lesser role? Was he let go without a proper offer? Like countless Red Sox faithful, Martínez is searching for answers. For a franchise built on the bond between a pitcher and his catcher, this chapter feels like it's missing a final page.
