The world of professional bull riding has lost one of its most remarkable athletes. UTZ BesTex Smokestack, affectionately known as R62 Smokestack, passed away unexpectedly due to complications during surgery, as confirmed by the UB Bucking Co in an emotional announcement.

This wasn't just any bull—Smokestack was a four-season veteran who built a legacy of grit and grace. Over 66 outs across 61 events, he posted a formidable 57% buck-off percentage, allowing only 29 rides. At one point, he strung together an incredible eight consecutive buck-offs, leaving even the sport's best riders searching for answers. His career average score of 44.10 placed him among the elite, and he earned top-10 PBR bull honors for three straight seasons.

When Smokestack did allow a ride, it was always a spectacle. He produced 90+ point rides for legends like Dalton Kasel, Daylon Swearingen, and John Crimber—moments that fans will replay for years. His highest-scoring career ride, a 45.75, came at the Shootout PBR Teams Event in 2024, a testament to his power and consistency. He was a regular in Championship rounds, the kind of bull that made every matchup must-see action.

But those who knew him best will remember something else entirely. Behind the beast on the dirt was a gentle giant with a personality as big as his athleticism. The team at UB Bucking Co described him as "a friendly face in bull housing, a teammate for riders' milestones, a media superstar, and proof even a bull could meet you with a soft and steady nature."

Smokestack was more than a competitor—he was a companion. His calm demeanor off the arena floor belied the ferocity he brought to every ride. The bull riding community is mourning deeply, with prayers and tributes pouring in for the entire UB Bucking Co family, as well as for Blake Sharp, who shared a special bond with this one-of-a-kind athlete.

In the arena, Smokestack was a challenge. In the barn, he was a friend. And in our hearts, he'll always be a legend.
