Paul Pierce claims Kevin Durant’s burner account drama and playoff injuries fractured the Rockets’ chemistry after a disappointing first-round exit.

Paul Pierce believes the Kevin Durant era in Houston may already be over, and it's not just about the injuries. The 2025–26 Rockets posted a solid 52–30 record, securing the fifth seed in the West despite key absences from Fred VanVleet and Steven Adams. Durant himself was healthy for most of the regular season, putting up 26 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 4.8 assists across 78 games. On paper, it looked like a successful campaign.

But behind the scenes, things were unraveling. The trouble reportedly began during the All-Star break when screenshots surfaced linking Durant to a burner account called "@gethigher77." The two-time NBA champion allegedly used it to criticize teammates Alperen Sengun and Jabari Smith Jr. Durant brushed it off as "Twitter nonsense," but according to The Athletic, the locker room never fully recovered. A player-only meeting was held, and everyone agreed to move forward, but the tension lingered like an unhealed bruise.

The real fracture came in the playoffs. Durant missed Game 1 with a knee injury, returned for Game 2, then sat out the rest of the series with an ankle sprain. Without him, the Rockets fell in six games to an underdog Lakers team that was missing Luka Doncic. It was a disappointing end to a season that had promised more.

Now, league insiders are questioning whether the experiment is over. On the "Ticket & The Truth" podcast, Paul Pierce pointed directly at the burner-account drama as the breaking point. "It sounds like, unofficially at least, the reports are that based on what happened this year with KD, the team, and the burner-account stuff allegedly saying things about the team, it fractured the relationship," Pierce said. "And if that's true, I think the time might be up."

Pierce isn't a Rockets insider, but he knows a broken locker room when he sees one. From his days with the "Big Three" Celtics to stops with the Nets and Clippers, he witnessed how internal friction can sink a season. For the Rockets, the warning signs are clear—and this offseason might be the moment they decide to hit reset.
