Jake Paul's boxing future hangs in the balance after a devastating jaw injury suffered during his December loss to British heavyweight Anthony Joshua. The 29-year-old YouTuber-turned-boxer admitted his career is "most definitely" in doubt as he awaits crucial scan results.
Paul underwent surgery to have two titanium plates fitted and multiple teeth removed after Joshua broke his jaw in two places during their heavyweight clash in Miami. The fight was stopped in the sixth round when Paul failed to beat the count following repeated knockdowns against the two-time world heavyweight champion.
"I'm getting some new scans in a couple of days to get an update on the healing process," Paul revealed on The Ariel Helwani Show. "We'll see what the doctors say. I think I'll be able to get a more accurate timeframe, or can I even fight again? That is definitely in the realm of possibility."
Despite the setback, Paul remains optimistic about his recovery. "It does feel a lot better as weeks go by, but I definitely need to get cleared to be able to spar. I'm staying in shape and enjoying some mitt work. I'm always in the gym regardless."
The defeat marked a significant turning point for Paul, who had built his boxing career largely against opponents past their prime or former mixed martial artists. The loss also saw him drop out of the WBA's cruiserweight rankings, prompting his team to consider a return to the 200-pound division.
Nakisa Bidarian, Paul's partner at Most Valuable Promotions, recently told BBC Sport that a cruiserweight comeback was being explored. But Paul himself remains cautious, acknowledging the uncertainty surrounding his recovery.
"I think it just depends on how the bone heals, and then also there's a tooth missing—I'm pretty sure I'm going to have to get an implant of some sort," he explained. "I don't know how much time that's going to add to things. But we just have to see and figure out what the smartest thing is for me."
For now, Paul's gym sessions continue, but the road back to the ring remains unclear. Whether this is a temporary pause or the end of his boxing journey will depend on the upcoming medical verdict.
