Jake Paul's boxing future hangs in the balance after the YouTuber-turned-fighter suffered a devastating jaw injury during his December loss to British heavyweight Anthony Joshua. The 29-year-old admitted his career is "most definitely" in doubt as he awaits crucial scan results that will determine whether he can ever step back into the ring.
The injury, which required two titanium plates and the removal of several teeth, occurred when Joshua broke Paul's jaw in two places during their heavyweight clash in Miami. Paul managed to go six rounds with the two-time world heavyweight champion but couldn't recover after repeated knockdowns forced the referee to stop the fight.
"I'm getting some new scans in a couple of days to get an update on the healing process," Paul revealed on The Ariel Helwani Show. "We'll see what the doctors say. I think I'll be able to get a more accurate timeframe, or can I even fight again? That is definitely in the realm of possibility."
The injury has already cost Paul his spot in the WBA cruiserweight rankings, a significant blow for a fighter who had been building momentum against a mix of past-their-prime boxers and former MMA stars. His promoter, Nakisa Bidarian, had previously indicated Paul was eyeing a return to cruiserweight, but those plans now face serious uncertainty.
Despite the setback, Paul remains in the gym, staying active with mitt work while awaiting medical clearance to spar. "It does feel a lot better as weeks go by, but I definitely need to get cleared," he said. "I'm staying in shape and enjoying some mitt work. I'm always in the gym regardless."
The timeline for any potential return remains unclear, with Paul also needing dental implants to replace the missing tooth. "I don't know how much time that's going to add to things," he added. "But we just have to see and figure out what the smartest thing is for me."
