The New England Patriots have been shaking things up this offseason, and one of the biggest moves was releasing wide receiver Stefon Diggs. Now, a Patriots superstar is making a strong pitch to bring him back.
Diggs, who turns 33 soon, was let go due to a hefty $26 million cap hit for the upcoming season. Since then, he's remained a free agent, but the legal cloud that was hanging over him has finally cleared. On Tuesday, Diggs was found not guilty of felony strangulation and misdemeanor assault and battery. With that behind him, he's now fully focused on finding his next team.
In a bold Instagram post, Diggs showcased his skills and stats, writing: "This is not an opinion-based sport, so here are the numbers. I played 52% of the snaps and finished with 85 catches for 1,045 yards coming off an ACL. Where we going?" It's a confident message from a receiver who still has plenty of gas in the tank.
That post caught the eye of Patriots cornerback Christian Gonzalez, who didn't waste any time making his feelings known. In the comments, Gonzalez replied simply: "To the Pats." It's a clear vote of confidence from a rising star in New England's secondary.
Diggs was the Patriots' leading receiver last season, and with his legal situation resolved, more teams could come calling. The Patriots have already added Romeo Doubs this offseason and are expected to land A.J. Brown after June 1, which would create a formidable receiving corps. Adding Diggs back into the mix could give the Patriots one of the deepest and most talented trios in the league.
But the big question is whether Diggs wants to return to New England, knowing he'd likely have a smaller role than before. He seems to harbor no hard feelings toward the organization, but the Patriots might not need him as much as other teams do. Still, with Gonzalez leading the recruiting charge, the door is certainly open for a reunion.
