The New England Patriots have an intriguing new weapon on their offensive line, and rookie Caleb Lomu is making one thing crystal clear: he's a tackle, through and through.

Drafted in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft, Lomu has been putting in the work at both right and left tackle during rookie minicamp. While he's been lining up predominantly on the left side so far, that could shift once he joins the veterans for full-team practices. Currently, Will Campbell holds down the starting left tackle spot, and the initial plan was for Lomu to eventually take over for 35-year-old right tackle Morgan Moses.

But here's where it gets interesting: if Lomu outplays Campbell in training camp, the Patriots could face a tough decision. And Lomu is ready for whatever comes his way.

"I just feel myself as a tackle just in general, left or right side," Lomu told reporters. "Having to play left in college, that's kind of what I got comfortable to. My first year at Utah, I was a swing tackle. So I feel comfortable at left, but I've also been working at right these past couple of months. I feel just as good on the right side. Either tackle position, I'm happy to play."

That kind of versatility is gold for an NFL team. A potential training camp battle between Lomu and Campbell is a "good problem" for the Patriots, as it means they're building real depth—not just starters, but reliable backups who can step in when injuries strike. And let's be honest, in the trenches, injuries are almost a given.

Lomu isn't just a backup insurance policy, though. He's got the talent and mindset to be an immediate starter. Whether that's on the left or right side remains to be seen, but one thing's for sure: the Patriots are serious about fortifying their offensive line, and Lomu is ready to suit up wherever he's needed.
