The New England Patriots' rookie class hit the practice fields behind Gillette Stadium for Day 2 of minicamp on Saturday, and despite the rainy weather, the energy was high. With nine draftees, undrafted free agents, and tryout players in attendance, the focus remained on teaching and learning as these young athletes continue to adapt to the NFL pace.
Saturday's hour-long session was light—no contact or pads allowed—but there was still plenty to observe. Notably, New England's Day 2 picks were absent from the action. While Raridon wasn't spotted (and reportedly signed his rookie contract today), Jacas watched from the sideline, frequently chatting with outside linebacker coach Mike Smith.
Seventh-round pick Quintayvious Hutchins left a team period early after receiving attention from the training staff in the medical shed. He then headed back to the facility and did not finish practice—something to keep an eye on as camp progresses.
Lomu locks in at left tackle
First-round pick Caleb Lomu spent the entire practice at left tackle, the position he primarily played at Utah. While Lomu has been cross-training at both tackle spots during the pre-draft process, his long-term projection in New England currently points to right tackle, with last year's No. 4 overall pick Will Campbell holding down the left side. Interestingly, the Patriots didn't rep him at right tackle on Day 2, as sixth-round pick Dametrious Crownover primarily manned that spot.
Morton shines under center
Seventh-round pick Behren Morton is the lone quarterback on the rookie roster, which means he's getting plenty of reps—and plenty of one-on-one coaching from offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, both on the field and in the classroom. Morton, who says he feels great physically after dealing with multiple injuries in high school, impressed during the lone 11-on-11 period. He completed all 11 passes without a single ball hitting the ground, including a beautifully layered dig route to Kyle Dixon.
As these rookies continue to build chemistry and learn the playbook, it's clear the Patriots are laying a strong foundation for the future. Stay tuned for more updates from Gillette Stadium.
