Patriots QB Drake Maye on Mike Vrabel amid controversy: 'A great human being'

New England Patriots QB Drake Maye said head coach Mike Vrabel is "a great human being" and doesn't expect the off-the-field news to be a distraction.

New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye is standing firmly behind his head coach, Mike Vrabel, amid recent off-field controversy. Speaking to the Associated Press, Maye described Vrabel as "a great human being" and expressed confidence that the team won't let the distraction derail their focus following their Super Bowl 60 loss.

"I know he's got the right mindset, and I know he's a great human being," Maye said. "I think he's ... like I said, I love playing for him."

The quarterback's comments come after Vrabel publicly stated he would take accountability for his actions, following reports linking him to former NFL Athletic reporter Dianna Russini. The New York Post published photographs of Vrabel and Russini together in April, sparking the controversy.

Maye made these remarks on Wednesday, May 6, after participating in the Truist Championship Pro-Am in Charlotte, where he was paired with PGA Tour pro Gary Woodland on the back nine at Quail Hollow. The appearance offered a glimpse of the young quarterback's composure off the field, even as questions swirl around his head coach.

For Patriots fans and the team itself, Maye's vote of confidence is a reassuring sign. As the Patriots look to rebound from their Super Bowl defeat, maintaining locker room unity will be critical. Vrabel, a former Patriots standout player who returned to the organization as head coach in January 2025, has long been respected for his leadership and football acumen. Now, he'll need to lean on that reputation to steer the team through this turbulent moment.
