The New England Patriots made a bold move in the first round of the NFL Draft by selecting Caleb Lomu, and they wasted no time getting him on the field. During Saturday's rookie minicamp, the team lined Lomu up at left tackle—a decision that has fans and analysts alike wondering: should starting left tackle Will Campbell be looking over his shoulder?

All offseason, the Patriots have been clear that Campbell is their man on the left side. Lomu was widely expected to slide into the right tackle role eventually. So why the switch? It turns out, the answer is simpler than it seems. Lomu spent the majority of his college career at Utah playing left tackle. It's his natural home on the line, and the Patriots are leaning into that comfort zone as he gets his feet wet at the NFL level.

For now, Lomu's role is likely that of a versatile backup—a player who can step in on either side of the line when needed. The left tackle position is the most critical for protecting a quarterback's blind side, so it makes sense that the Patriots want Lomu to master that spot first. This way, he's ready to fill the most important role if called upon, while also building the foundation for his future on the right side.

Lomu himself is embracing the flexibility. "I feel comfortable at left, but I've also been working out on the right these past few months, so I feel just as good on the right side as well," he said during his introductory press conference. "Either tackle position, I'm happy to play and feel comfortable playing."

Given the Patriots' offensive line struggles last season, Lomu could be a key piece in the rebuild. Even if he doesn't see significant playing time this year, he provides valuable insurance against injuries to Campbell or veteran Morgan Moses. Down the road, Lomu is expected to take over for Moses, who is entering the twilight of his career. For now, Campbell can breathe easy—but the competition is just beginning.
