The Patriots changed defensive coordinators this offseason.

The New England Patriots' coaching staff is evolving once again in 2026, and while the changes may not be as seismic as in years past, one key shift on defense is already generating buzz among players and fans alike.

After a season marked by resilience and adaptation, the Patriots have officially promoted Zak Kuhr to defensive coordinator—a role he effectively stepped into last year when health issues sidelined nominal coordinator Terrell Williams. Williams, who missed most of the 2025 season while undergoing treatment for prostate cancer, has transitioned to an assistant head coach position within the organization. Kuhr, meanwhile, is no stranger to the defense's inner workings; his aggressive play-calling during the postseason was a major factor in New England's run to Super Bowl runner-up status.

To fill Kuhr's previous role as inside linebackers coach, the team has elevated Vinny DePalma, a defensive assistant who has spent the last two seasons working closely with the linebacker corps—including team captain Robert Spillane.

For Spillane, the continuity is more important than the title change. "That was kind of in the works throughout the season last year," he explained. "So, that kind of became our new normal at some point last year. To carry that on through the offseason, knowing that that's what we're going to have going into 2026, that's very exciting. We get to continue to build on the progress that we've already put in to understanding this defense, and now it's about cleaning things up, being super technical and fundamental with everything that we do."

Despite Williams' limited on-field presence—he coordinated just one game before stepping away—the Patriots' defense was one of the league's best in 2025. Now, with Kuhr officially at the helm and the core system already in place, the team is focused on refinement. The offseason program is already underway, with players and coaches alike doubling down on fundamentals and technique.

"It's very exciting," Spillane added. "Obviously, you go away for a point. You play the Super Bowl, it doesn't go the way you want. You disperse throughout the offseason, but knowing that we're building on something real—that's what gets you out of bed in the morning."

For a team that came within a game of a championship, the message is clear: the foundation is set, and now it's time to elevate every detail. Whether you're a die-hard Patriots fan or just love seeing a defense click, this is a story of growth, grit, and the relentless pursuit of greatness.
