The New England Patriots have pivoted from a planned release to executing a trade, sending linebacker Marte Mapu to the Houston Texans. This move provides a fresh start for the young defender and adds depth to a rising Texans squad.

According to reports, the deal involves a late-round pick swap between the two franchises. Mapu, a 2023 third-round selection, spent his first three seasons in New England, where he was a core special teams contributor. Last season, he was on the field for 58% of special teams snaps but saw limited defensive action.

Entering the final year of his rookie contract, Mapu is slated to earn a base salary of $1.509 million. This trade offers him a new opportunity to compete for a more defined defensive role in Houston's system, while the Patriots continue to reshape their roster under a new regime.
