When the New England Patriots signed Romeo Doubs this offseason, they added a proven playmaker to their receiving corps. But there's an extra layer of intrigue: Doubs will face his former team, the Green Bay Packers, in the upcoming season.
Drafted by Green Bay in 2022, Doubs spent four productive seasons with the Packers, catching passes from both Aaron Rodgers and Jordan Love. Now, he'll be catching balls from Patriots quarterback Drake Maye after signing a four-year, $80 million deal in New England.
When asked if he had the Packers game circled on his calendar, Doubs took the high road. "Nah man," he said Tuesday. "Green Bay took care of me. There's no reason for me to have that level of pressure against them. My career started there. They taught me the foundation of football, how football works, situational football and just understanding complementary football and the overall game in general. They showed me the ropes. I know we play them this year, but it's not even like that."
That response is classic Doubs—a player who lets his performance speak louder than words. The Packers' receiver room was crowded last season, featuring Doubs, Christian Watson, Jayden Reed, Dontayvion Wicks, Malik Heath, Bo Melton, Matthew Golden, and Savion Williams. With five players capable of being every-down contributors, something had to give. Green Bay opted to let Doubs walk and trade Wicks, settling on Watson, Reed, and Golden as their core trio.
For Doubs, this move represents a fresh start and a chance to become a focal point of New England's passing attack. While he holds no grudge against his former squad, Patriots fans can expect a motivated receiver ready to prove his worth when those two teams meet.
