Patrick Mahomes' lingering injury concerns have effectively shut down any trade rumors linking the Kansas City Chiefs to star wide receiver George Pickens—at least for now.

Pickens, who was the Dallas Cowboys' top receiver last season with 93 catches for 1,429 yards and nine touchdowns, has officially signed his franchise tag deal worth $27.3 million for the 2026 season. However, questions remain about his offseason participation, leaving the door open for trade speculation.

The buzz picked up during this week's episode of "The Mina Kimes Show," where analyst Bill Barnwell was asked if he'd trade a 2027 second-round pick for Pickens if he were Chiefs GM Brett Veach. Barnwell's response was clear: "I would not, because I don't know if Patrick Mahomes is actually gonna be healthy. If you're already playing with one hand behind your back for a quarter of the year, for one year of George Pickens I would not do it."

Kansas City recently signed Justin Fields as insurance behind Mahomes, but some argue that giving up premium draft capital for a one-year rental of Pickens doesn't make sense if the team's Super Bowl window is uncertain. The counterpoint? If the Chiefs invested in Fields to stay competitive without Mahomes, adding Pickens would give Fields a top-tier weapon to help win early-season games.

For context, Pickens was originally drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the second round in 2022. The Cowboys traded a third-round pick and a fifth-rounder to land him and a sixth-round selection last offseason. He wasted no time making an impact, immediately becoming Dallas' go-to target.

For now, the Chiefs appear to be playing it safe—opting for stability over a splashy move that could backfire if Mahomes isn't at full strength. As for Pickens, he'll suit up for the Cowboys unless something changes dramatically.
