When the Cleveland Guardians traded for Patrick Bailey, they knew they were getting a catcher built on defense. But it only took his second start to remind everyone exactly why he was worth the move.

On Tuesday, Bailey took charge behind the plate, tasked with handling Slade Cecconi—the Guardians' most struggling starter so far this season. Cecconi entered the game with a 19% whiff rate and a scattered pitch mix, throwing four-seamers 34% of the time, cutters 26%, sinkers 16%, curveballs 15%, and sliders/sweepers 10%. It was a recipe that hadn't been clicking.

What followed was a masterclass in game management. Cecconi later told reporters he didn't shake off Bailey once the entire outing, meaning every pitch call was the catcher's decision. And Bailey made some bold choices.

Over four innings against the Angels, Cecconi's whiff rate jumped to 25%. The secret? A fastball-heavy approach. Bailey called for sinkers 38% of the time, four-seamers 33%, and cutters 22%, while nearly abandoning curveballs and sweepers—cutting their usage to just 6%. The location changed dramatically too, with Bailey steering pitches up in the zone rather than wasting them below. Given Cecconi's sinker and four-seamer both boast above-average vertical movement, Bailey trusted that high heat would generate more swings and misses. It worked, and Cecconi's fastball velocity ticked up by over 1 mph across the board.

What makes Bailey's strategy even more impressive is the context. The Angels rank among the top five teams in MLB against four-seamers and cutters. But they're dead last—29th—against sinkers. And Cecconi's sinker has been his best pitch this season, sitting at +2.5 runs above average. Bailey bet on that matchup, leaning into the sinker's strength and letting it play off the cutter and four-seamer. The risk paid off, and the Guardians got a glimpse of the defensive backbone they brought in to steady the ship.
