Path Clears for Longtime Viking to Start

The Minnesota Vikings entered the offseason with a glaring question mark at center, and now, the answer appears to be right in front of them. After months of speculation, all signs point to longtime offensive lineman Blake Brandel as the man to fill the void.

Instead of chasing big-name free agents, trading for a proven starter, or drafting a rookie center early, the Vikings have stayed quiet—and that silence speaks volumes. By passing on outside options, the team has essentially cleared a path for Brandel to step into the starting role when the season kicks off in September.

So, should fans be excited or nervous about Brandel anchoring the offensive line? Let’s break it down.

According to The Athletic's Alec Lewis, the Vikings' faith in Brandel is nothing new. "For years, coaches felt he had the physical traits to play center," Lewis reported. "They thought he could thrive if he ever got the full-time job." That belief was put to the test in 2025, when Brandel was thrown into the fire against the Cleveland Browns' formidable defensive front. And he didn't just survive—he thrived.

Standing at 6-foot-7 and 315 pounds, Brandel brings a sturdy presence to the middle of the line. His ability to play every position along the offensive line gives him a deep understanding of pre- and post-snap reads, making him a versatile weapon for head coach Kevin O'Connell's system.

Despite starting the season as a backup, Brandel ended up playing in all 17 games, starting nine and logging 64% of Minnesota's offensive snaps. That heavy workload came as a result of significant injuries to the Vikings' offensive line, but it also gave Brandel invaluable experience.

Lewis added that "as long as he doesn't suffer a summer injury, he should enter training camp with a clear path to the starting job."

For a team that can't afford uncertainty up front, betting on Brandel is a calculated risk. But if his 2025 performance is any indication, the Vikings might have found their center of the future without ever leaving the building.
