A lot of changes are needed for the Miami Heat to go back into title contention. Yes, they have the core of Tyler Herro, Norman Powell, and Bam Adebayo but it has clearly not been enough. Certain schemes and rotations have not been working out for Coach Erik Spoelstra too. As a result, they came crashing down in the NBA Play-In Tournament against the Charlotte Hornets. These are all the reasons why Pat Riley is staying with them.
Plenty of leaders in the NBA and sports would already retire by the age of 80. Pat Riley is not one of those. He is already 81 years old and plans on continuing his journey in leading the Heat to another Larry O'Brien trophy. The last time that Riley did that? LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Bosh were still in their 20s back in 2013.
Riley outlined why he wants to stay with the Heat and it was all rooted in disappointment, via James Jackson of The Athletic.
"I’m not going to retire. I’m not going to resign. I’m not going to step aside. I want another parade down Biscayne Boulevard. I’m really pissed. I’m disappointed. Disgruntled, just like everyone else in the organization who understands what we’re about. So, the last three to four years, with the exception of when we went to the finals, I’m not proud of. It’s about trying to compete at the highest levels. If we’re fighting for the last spot in the Play-In, we’re going to fight until our last breath, Riley said.
Notably, Riley also wants to stay with the Heat to see Bam Adebayo win the Larry O'Brien trophy. They failed to do that with Jimmy Butler, so the Heat will be going all-in on their star who just scored 83 points and broke Kobe Bryant's scoring record.
"I don’t blame Bam for being frustrated with what’s happened. He’s had some great years. Our core group of Bam, Tyler and Norm — we got that 14-7 start — but we couldn’t have the continuity we needed. I’ve had a few talks with Bam. He knows everyone in basketball operations is going to try to help him. … He deserves to win more," the Heat executive said.
The Heat also have plans of making a run for a larger star when NBA Free Agency opens up. This could mean a larger push for Giannis Antetokounmpo or someone with enough defensive prowess to pull them out of their yearly NBA Play-In appearance.
