In a dramatic finish that will be remembered for years, Park City High School captured its first-ever girls golf state championship at Glendale Golf Course in Salt Lake City, and the Miners celebrated their historic victory not once, but twice—with plenty of nail-biting tension in between.

"An emotional roller coaster," described Park City girls golf coach George Murphy, reflecting on how his program had been the bridesmaid eight times since girls golf became a UHSAA-sanctioned sport in 2008, finishing as runner-up year after year without ever claiming the crown.

The championship came down to a one-hole playoff on the Par 4 10th hole, where Park City edged out runner-up Juan Diego with a four-player aggregate score of 18 to the Soaring Eagle's 21. The Miners' quartet of Eleanor Henderson, Chloe Aldous, Madeline Hadar, and Ava Miller delivered rock-solid play from tee to green, while Juan Diego saw a couple of players send their approaches long and over the green, opening the door for Park City's historic breakthrough.

While the team drama unfolded, Crimson Cliffs senior Kate Walker wrote her own chapter in state golf history. The Utah Tech-bound star captured medalist honors for the third time in four years, carding a spectacular two-round total of 8-under 136 to win by nine strokes over Orem's Kaylee Westfall. "I am proud of myself for working hard, coming back from last year," Walker said, referencing her runner-up finish in 2022 after a car crash fractured her pinky finger just two weeks before the state tournament.

With the course playing tougher on Thursday than her opening-round 68, Walker fired another stellar 4-under round but admitted the pressure never fully eased. "It may seem like I had a big cushion, but in your mind it is never over until it is over," she said. "I got a little frustrated because I made a couple of bogeys." The champion won't have much downtime—she's already entered in a Utah Junior Golf Association event at TalonsCove GC in Saratoga Springs.

As for the Miners, their celebration plans include hitting a favorite restaurant back in Park City to toast their historic win—for a third time. The first impromptu celebration erupted when an official mistakenly announced they had won by a couple of strokes over Juan Diego right after the final group finished on the 18th green, setting off a roller coaster of emotions that ended with the ultimate prize: Park City's first-ever girls golf state championship trophy.
