The swimming world is mourning the loss of a remarkable athlete and leader. Hannah Nelson, a 23-year-old member of the U.S. Para Swimming World Championship team and a record-holder for Ave Maria University in Florida, has passed away following a catastrophic brain bleed that began on Saturday, March 30. She died on Easter Sunday.

Nelson's journey in the pool was defined by incredible resilience. She began swimming at age eight and faced a life-altering challenge at just 11 years old when she was diagnosed with bone cancer, leading to the partial amputation of her left leg. She channeled that adversity into athletic excellence, rising to become a national team member.

Her crowning achievement came in 2023 when she represented Team USA at the World Para Swimming Championships in Manchester, England, where she placed 7th in the highly competitive 400m Freestyle S10 event. At Ave Maria University, she was a program record-holder and the heart of her team.

"Hannah was the definition of a true leader for our team, both in and out of the pool," said Ave Maria head coach Giordan Harris. "Between her collegiate and Paralympic careers, her story impacted a lot of people well beyond our campus. Hannah was joyful, bright and genuinely happy to be at Ave Maria. We are going to miss her."

Her teammates echoed this sentiment, with Maeve O'Brien remembering how Nelson "was able to brighten any practice." The profound loss has resonated across the entire swimming community. USA Para Swimming honored her on Instagram, stating, "She proudly represented @teamusa... and was a valued member of the U.S. Paralympics Swimming team. Our thoughts are with her family and all who knew her."

Nelson's funeral was held at Ave Maria Catholic Church, where her fellow swimmers from the university team served as pallbearers, a final tribute to a teammate whose spirit, strength, and smile left an indelible mark on everyone she met.
