Even after bulking up off a very strong offseason, the Panthers rank surprisingly low in The Athletic's roster rankings.

The Carolina Panthers made headlines this offseason with what many analysts called a "monster" performance, even earning the title of "offseason champions" from Pro Football Focus. Yet, despite these glowing reviews, not everyone is convinced the team has turned a corner.

In a new roster ranking from The Athletic, the Panthers landed at a surprisingly low 25th out of 32 NFL teams. The Los Angeles Rams, Seattle Seahawks, and Buffalo Bills claimed the top three spots, leaving Carolina far behind in the eyes of their projection model.

The Athletic's analysis highlights concerns about the team's quarterback situation, noting that while Bryce Young's inexpensive fifth-year option might be picked up, they're "almost certain he's not worthy of a long-term contract." They also point to weaknesses at edge rusher (ranked 23rd) and defensive line (19th), suggesting that even a strong cornerbacks room (No. 8) won't matter much given the state of the pass rush.

However, ranking Carolina's roster 25th feels overly harsh—even if you assume outside linebacker Jaelen Phillips won't add another sack. Rookie Nic Scourton flashed significant potential last season and should bolster the pass rush, while Princely Umanmielen could provide a much-needed boost if he follows suit. The Panthers also added an excellent run stuffer in Texas Tech's Lee Hunter, who should free up Derrick Brown to be even more disruptive. Additionally, the off-ball linebacker room looks improved with the addition of Pro Bowler Devin Lloyd, a move that should help stabilize the entire defense.

There's still a hole at safety next to Tre'von Moehrig, but overall, this secondary has the makings of a top-10 unit heading into the 2026 season. The Athletic's model does have a point on the offensive side, though—while Bryce Young is on the rise, the rest of the quarterback room remains a question mark. Still, for a team that's clearly building momentum, this ranking feels like a missed opportunity to recognize the Panthers' upward trajectory.
