The Carolina Panthers have a glaring hole on their roster, and it's not getting any easier to ignore. After bypassing tight end in the 2026 NFL Draft, the position stands out as the team's weakest link—even more so than their thin safety room.
Free agency offers little relief. David Njoku and Jonnu Smith are the top available tight ends, but the Panthers are roughly $3 million over the salary cap when factoring in their rookie class. That makes signing either one a non-starter.
Enter a compelling trade proposal from Bleacher Report's Kristopher Knox, who suggests the Panthers target Chicago Bears tight end Cole Kmet. At 27 years old and standing 6-foot-6, 257 pounds, Kmet brings the kind of pass-catching presence Carolina has lacked since Greg Olsen's prime.
Kmet has been a consistent weapon for the Bears, topping 500 receiving yards in three of his six seasons. Over 100 career games, he's hauled in 288 catches for 2,939 yards and 21 touchdowns—production that would instantly upgrade a Panthers offense in need of a reliable third-down target and red-zone threat.
While Carolina added wide receiver Chris Brazzell II in the third round, rookies are never a sure thing. Kmet would give quarterback Bryce Young a proven security blanket, someone who can move the chains and stretch the field in critical moments.
Knox's proposed deal: a conditional 2027 fourth-round pick to Chicago for Kmet. It's a low-risk move that could pay huge dividends for a Panthers team searching for answers at a key position.
