Aleksander Barkov intends to play hockey sooner rather than later. The Florida captain, who missed the entirety of the Panthers' season because of a major knee injury suffered 20 minutes into his first practice of training camp, plans to accept an invitation to play for his native Finland at the world championships next month. It would be his first time in competitive games since the Panthers won their second consecutive Stanley Cup last June.

After a frustrating season spent entirely on the sidelines, Florida Panthers captain Aleksander Barkov is finally eyeing a return to the ice. The star center, who suffered a major knee injury just 20 minutes into his first training camp practice, plans to accept an invitation to represent Finland at the upcoming IIHF World Championship next month.

This would mark Barkov's first competitive action since hoisting the Stanley Cup with the Panthers last June, a championship that capped a legendary playoff run. Missing the entire title defense campaign was a brutal blow for the two-way force, who was also slated to captain Finland at the Winter Olympics before the injury.

"It’s a big honor to represent Finland for me," Barkov said. "One of those childhood dreams — to win world championships — is a big goal for me, too. So, I'm really excited about that. I’ve been working really hard to get in shape.”

His return path was complicated by Florida's own difficult season. Plagued by injuries to more than half their regular lineup, the Panthers fell out of playoff contention weeks ago. Had they been in the hunt, Barkov's comeback might have happened sooner, as he has been skating for months. However, the team's position allowed for a more patient, long-term approach to his recovery.

Panthers GM Bill Zito endorsed the plan, noting, “For him, I think it’s really special. He missed so much hockey, he wants to play hockey. It's great.” Barkov may not be the only Panther heading to the tournament in Switzerland, which begins May 15; Olympic gold medalist Matthew Tkachuk is also considering playing for Team USA, pending health and family considerations.

For Barkov, the World Championship represents more than just a return—it's a chance to chase international glory and regain his elite form, setting the stage for a powerful comeback next NHL season.
