In a heated clash that left fans on the edge of their seats, Palmeiras was held to a 1-1 draw against Remo at Mangueirão this Sunday, marking the 15th round of the 2026 Brasileirão. While the result keeps Verdão perched atop the table with 34 points, the pressure is mounting as Flamengo lurks just behind with 30 points and a game in hand—setting the stage for a massive showdown on May 23 at the Maracanã in round 17.

But the real drama unfolded in stoppage time. Palmeiras thought they had snatched a dramatic victory when Bruno Fuchs found the net, only for the referee to disallow the goal after a VAR review. The call? A handball by Flaco López during the build-up. The decision didn't sit well with the club, and football director Anderson Barros didn't hold back in a post-match press conference, taking the unusual step of reading the rulebook aloud to make his case.

"The goal is valid," Barros insisted, citing the specific rule that states an accidental handball by an attacking player is not an infringement if the ball then falls to a teammate who scores. "The goal is only disallowed if the player himself scores after the handball. Here, it was an accidental touch at the start of the play—it should have stood."

Barros didn't stop there, pointing fingers at the CBF and its refereeing officials, Rodrigo Cintra and Péricles Bassols. "That would have been two more points for Palmeiras. Whose responsibility is that? We can no longer allow this kind of glaring error. How are we going to recover from it?"

The director also addressed the ongoing tension around officiating, referencing head coach Abel Ferreira's recent six-match suspension from the STJD for criticizing referees. "Palmeiras was punished for questioning the officials, but the STJD hasn't maintained that same standard for others. It's inconsistent," Barros noted, vowing to demand "urgent action" from the CBF.

For now, Palmeiras will have to regroup and focus on their next challenge—a crucial top-of-the-table clash with Flamengo that could define their season. But with the refereeing controversy still fresh, the conversation around fairness and accountability in Brazilian football is far from over.
