SAN FRANCISCO -- Monday was overall a frustrating night for the San Diego Padres, who were held to just three hits in their 3-2 series opening loss against the Giants at Oracle Park.

Monday night at Oracle Park was a frustrating one for the San Diego Padres, as their offensive struggles continued in a 3-2 series-opening loss to the Giants. The Padres managed just three hits all night, leaving fans and players alike searching for answers.

Right-hander Randy Vásquez turned in a solid outing on the mound (3-1, 3.20 ERA), but the bats couldn't solve San Francisco's young right-hander Trevor McDonald. Making his season debut, the 25-year-old McDonald was electric, allowing just one run on two hits while striking out eight over 81 pitches.

"The kid was making pitches," Padres manager Craig Stammen said. "He's throwing a little harder than what he's doing all year. You know, his season debut, came out firing in front of the home crowd. We made it a little easier on him."

The lone bright spot against McDonald was outfielder Jackson Merrill, who accounted for both of the Padres' early runs. Merrill kicked off the game with a first-pitch solo home run in the first inning, then added a lead-off single in the fourth. Ramón Laureano provided the final spark with a solo shot in the ninth, but it wasn't enough to close the gap.

The rest of the lineup struggled mightily. Fernando Tatis Jr. went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts, Manny Machado finished 0-for-4, and Gavin Sheets, Miguel Andújar, and Freddy Fermin all failed to reach base. San Diego left just two runners on base and went 0-for-1 with runners in scoring position.

Coming off a disappointing 2-4 homestand last week, this performance is especially concerning. A team loaded with superstar talent shouldn't be shut down this easily—or this often. Opposing starting pitchers have now recorded 16 quality starts against the Padres this season, the most in all of Major League Baseball.

For a team with championship aspirations, finding a way to break out of this offensive slump is critical. Whether it's adjusting at the plate or getting more aggressive early in counts, the Padres need to find answers—and fast.
