San Diego could look to upgrade the starting rotation.

The San Diego Padres are eyeing a starting rotation boost as the MLB trade deadline approaches, and two Kansas City Royals All-Star pitchers have emerged as potential targets. But for Padres fans hoping for a familiar face, the choice is clear: Seth Lugo over Michael Wacha.

San Diego's rotation has been a mixed bag so far this season. While Randy Vázquez has been a pleasant surprise, questions linger about the back end. Walker Buehler owns a 5.40 ERA through his first six starts, and Griffin Canning just returned from a ruptured Achilles. Behind ace Michael King, the Padres are making it work with guys like Matt Waldron, but that's not a sustainable formula for a playoff push.

FanSided's Chris Landers laid out the logic: "This is an either/or situation here, not a both. But if San Diego wants to build on its surprisingly strong start, it's going to need to bolster a rotation that so far has been making it work." Landers pointed to Lugo and Wacha as ideal trade targets, noting either would "profile nicely as a back-end innings-eater that will make full use of the pitcher-friendly confines of Petco Park."

Here's why Lugo stands out. The 36-year-old right-hander already pitched for the Padres in 2023, posting a 3.66 ERA at Petco Park while allowing just seven home runs in 64 innings. He's off to an even hotter start this season with a 2.68 ERA and 37 strikeouts through seven starts. His arsenal—featuring eight different pitches and an average fastball at 91.5 mph—remains among the best in baseball.

Wacha is no slouch, but Lugo's proven track record in San Diego, plus his elite breaking stuff, makes him the clear frontrunner. For a team looking to solidify its rotation without breaking the bank, a reunion with Lugo could be the move that keeps the Padres competitive deep into October.
