San Diego Padres closer Mason Miller is etching his name into franchise lore with a historic run of dominance. On Thursday, he sealed an 8th straight Padres win—a 5-2 victory over the Seattle Mariners that completed a sweep—by striking out the side, all looking. The win pushes the red-hot Padres to a 13-6 record, sitting just 1.5 games behind the Dodgers in the NL West.
More importantly, that clean inning extended Miller's remarkable scoreless streak to 30.2 innings. That moves him past Padres legend and 1976 Cy Young winner Randy Jones for the second-longest such streak in team history. Only former reliever Cla Meredith's 33.2-inning run stands ahead of him now.
Passing Jones carries profound weight, especially as the team continues to honor the late icon following his passing last November. "We’re wearing his patch, his name is on the facade of the stadium up there," Miller said postgame. "It’s just special that we’re recognizing his greatness... I’m just happy to honor him." Jones's streak, interestingly, came during a tough 1980 season, built on three consecutive shutouts.
Acquired from Oakland at last year's trade deadline, Miller has been virtually untouchable since a brief adjustment period. He hasn't allowed a run since his second Padres appearance on August 5th. In 2025, he's a perfect 6-for-6 in save opportunities. As the Padres ride this wave of momentum into a weekend series against the Angels, all eyes will be on Miller as he continues his chase for the franchise record and cements his status as a new San Diego ace.
