This would be a very A.J. Preller-esque trade, but it's not likely.

The San Diego Padres and general manager A.J. Preller have built a reputation as one of baseball's most aggressive front offices, capable of pulling off blockbuster trades at any moment. From last year's deal for flame-throwing reliever Mason Miller to countless other headline-grabbing moves, Preller has never been shy about swinging for the fences.

So when whispers started circulating about a potential Mike Trout trade, Padres fans had every reason to dream. The future Hall of Famer is experiencing a resurgence, and adding his bat to an already loaded San Diego lineup would be the kind of move that defines a franchise. But according to The Athletic's Keith Law, that dream is likely dead on arrival.

"The Padres could find a place for his bat, but they don't have the prospects the Angels should be demanding," Law wrote, "and I'm not sure their new owners want to take on yet another long-term contract."

That's a brutal one-two punch for San Diego. The prospect cupboard is notably bare after the Miller trade, and with new ownership still finding its footing, absorbing Trout's massive contract seems unlikely. While the Angels may finally be ready to part with their superstar, the Padres simply don't have the trade chips or financial flexibility to make it happen.

Trout would be a versatile addition—whether in center field, a corner outfield spot, or as a designated hitter. And in a season where the Padres are trying to chase down the Dodgers, adding a generational talent would be a game-changer. But for now, this particular blockbuster looks like it will remain on the wish list rather than the transaction wire.
