A closer look at the training aid Padraig Harrington used on the range at the PGA and how it can help you dial in your swing.

Padraig Harrington is known for tinkering with his swing, so when he showed up at the 2026 PGA Championship with a curious new training aid, the golf world took notice. The three-time major winner was spotted on the range at Aronimink Golf Club with a large device positioned in front of him, and it wasn't long before everyone wanted to know: what is it, and could it help your game?

We asked Dr. Alison Curdt, a GOLF Top 100 Teacher, to break it down. According to Curdt, the device Harrington used is essentially an oversized alignment rod—think of it as a modern take on Ben Hogan's classic "pane of glass" concept. It provides both visual and physical feedback for your swing plane, making it a powerful tool for any golfer looking to dial in their mechanics.

Here's how it works: the rod helps you monitor two critical aspects of your swing—shoulder tilt and spine angle. As you make your backswing, the rod gives you immediate feedback on whether you're staying under that imaginary "pane of glass." Curdt explains that this is especially helpful at the P3 position (when your lead arm is parallel to the ground), a crucial checkpoint where the butt end of the grip should be pointing toward the target line.

For even better results, Curdt recommends using two rods—one behind the ball like Harrington, and another out front—to create a crystal-clear visual of your ideal swing plane. "The size of the aid is just a really nice visual representation for students to see," she says, "because they're literally swinging underneath that plane."

Whether you're a weekend warrior or a serious competitor, this simple but effective tool could be the key to unlocking more consistent, powerful swings. It's the kind of gear that proves even the pros are always looking for an edge—and now you can, too.
