With the Packers' signing of Brenden Rice, allow us to turn our bitter hearts' attention to an unforgettable playoff game after the 1998 season.

The Green Bay Packers have signed Brenden Rice, son of legendary wide receiver Jerry Rice, and for Packers fans, this move brings back a painful memory that still stings more than 25 years later.

Let's rewind to January 3, 1999. The Packers were in San Francisco for a wild-card playoff game, riding high after back-to-back Super Bowl appearances. With just three seconds left on the clock, 49ers quarterback Steve Young connected with Terrell Owens for a 25-yard touchdown, giving San Francisco a 30-27 win that still haunts Green Bay faithful.

But the real controversy came earlier in that final drive. With about 35 seconds remaining, Jerry Rice hauled in a 6-yard pass—his only catch of the game. Replays clearly showed the Hall of Famer fumbled before his knee hit the ground. Packers linebacker Bernardo Harris recovered near midfield, which would have sealed the victory. But the officials ruled Rice down immediately.

In today's NFL, that call would have been overturned in seconds. Back then, the league hadn't yet adopted a full replay system—that wouldn't happen until the 1999 season. Even the broadcast crew noticed. Legendary announcer John Madden commented in real time, "There's gonna be another vote for instant replay, and it's gonna win this year, I would say. Boy, the 49ers got a few more plays right there."

The loss marked the end of an era for Green Bay. Coach Mike Holmgren left for Seattle just five days later, and the Packers missed the playoffs the next two seasons. Meanwhile, the 49ers advanced—only to lose to Atlanta, the same team Green Bay would have faced if they'd held on.

Now, with Brenden Rice wearing green and gold, Packers fans can't help but remember that cold January day when his father's fumble—and a missed call—changed the course of franchise history.
