The backup QB job in Green Bay appears to be Tyrod Taylor's. The Packers are releasing Desmond Ridder.

The Green Bay Packers have made a decisive move in their quarterback room, parting ways with Desmond Ridder just months after signing him. According to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, the team is releasing Ridder following the acquisition of veteran Tyrod Taylor on Monday.

Ridder, a fourth-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, saw action as a starter in 17 games for the Atlanta Falcons before his career took a winding path. He joined the Packers in late December and served as a backup to Jordan Love during the postseason. However, his opportunity to compete for the No. 2 spot in 2026 has quickly evaporated.

With Ridder out, the Packers will now lean on Taylor, along with Kyle McCord and undrafted rookie Kyron Drones, to support Love as the offseason program heats up. Taylor, who turns 37 in August, brings a wealth of experience with 100 career NFL games under his belt. Once a multi-year starter for the Buffalo Bills and Cleveland Browns, he has since become a reliable backup across seven previous teams—Green Bay will be his eighth stop.

Behind Taylor, the competition for the developmental third-string role is heating up. McCord, a 2025 draft pick by the Philadelphia Eagles, will likely battle Drones—a free agent signing out of Virginia Tech—for a spot on the practice squad. It's a classic training camp storyline: veteran savvy versus raw potential.

For Ridder, this release marks another chapter in a nomadic NFL journey. Since his tenure as Atlanta's starter, he has bounced through the Arizona Cardinals, Las Vegas Raiders, Cincinnati Bengals, and Minnesota Vikings before landing in Green Bay. Now, he'll be looking for his next opportunity to prove he can still contribute at the highest level.
