The Green Bay Packers' brief experiment with tight end Luke Lachey has come to an abrupt end. After claiming the rookie off waivers from the Houston Texans earlier this week, the team announced Thursday that Lachey failed his physical, making him a free agent once again.

Lachey, a "Y" tight end known for his inline blocking ability, seemed like a perfect fit for a Packers offense that has been searching for that specific skill set. General manager Brian Gutekunst admitted after the draft that the team was actively looking for an inline tight end, but the right value never materialized on draft day. Lachey was selected by the Texans in the seventh round of the 2025 NFL Draft and did not have a failed physical designation when he was waived by Houston.

This marks the second time this offseason that the Packers have failed a tight end on a physical, following undrafted rookie Eni Falayi, who also didn't pass muster upon reporting to the team. It's a frustrating development for a position group that could use a reliable blocker to complement its receiving threats.

Currently, Green Bay's tight end room features Tucker Kraft, Luke Musgrave, Josh Whyle, Drake Dabney, Messiah Swinson, and RJ Maryland. While there's talent here, especially in the passing game, the lack of a proven inline blocker remains a notable gap.

With Lachey's departure, the Packers now have an open roster spot to fill. In brighter news, the team announced that rookie second-round cornerback Brandon Cisse has signed his contract, meaning all of Green Bay's draft picks are now officially under contract. Additionally, former Packers defensive tackle James Ester, who was waived to make room for the waiver claim of receiver Brenden Rice (yes, Jerry Rice's son), has been claimed by the Miami Dolphins.
