The Green Bay Packers are making moves this offseason, and their latest addition comes with a legendary last name. On Wednesday, the team claimed wide receiver Brenden Rice off waivers from the Las Vegas Raiders. Yes, that Rice—the son of Hall of Famer Jerry Rice.

This isn't Brenden's first stop in the NFL. The 6'2", 208-pound receiver has already suited up for the Chargers, Patriots, Seahawks, and Raiders, though mostly on practice squads. His actual game experience is limited to three regular-season appearances with the Chargers in 2024, where he logged just three offensive snaps and 10 special teams reps. But the Packers see potential worth developing.

Rice's college journey took him from Colorado to USC, where he found his groove. In his final two seasons with the Trojans, he posted back-to-back 600-yard receiving campaigns, including an 11-touchdown breakout in 2023. That production earned him a seventh-round pick (No. 225 overall) in the 2024 NFL Draft, with a Relative Athletic Score of 7.17 out of 10.00.

He now joins a crowded Packers receiver room that includes Christian Watson, Matthew Golden, Jayden Reed, and several others competing for targets. To make room on the roster, Green Bay waived defensive tackle James Ester, who had spent the last two seasons on the practice squad.

For a young receiver carrying the weight of a famous surname, the Packers are offering a fresh start and a chance to carve out his own legacy. As Dane Brugler of The Athletic noted when scouting Rice out of USC, it's never easy being Jerry Rice's son—but Brenden has grown more comfortable in his own skin with each passing season. Now, he'll look to prove he belongs in green and gold.
