Pacers president Kevin Pritchard apologized on X for trading the 5th pick in NBA Draft. Some respected it; others ... not so much

Indiana Pacers team president Kevin Pritchard took to social media over the weekend to issue a heartfelt apology to fans after a high-stakes gamble didn't pay off. The Pacers traded a top-4 protected pick to the Los Angeles Clippers in exchange for center Ivica Zubac—and then watched as the pick landed at No. 5 in Sunday's NBA Draft lottery.

"I'm really sorry to all our fans. I own taking this risk. Surprised it came up 5th after this year. I thought we were due some luck. But please remember—this team deserved a starting center to compete with the best teams next year. We have always been resilient," Pritchard wrote.

The response from Pacers fans was as mixed as a mid-season trade deadline. Some respected the rare moment of accountability from a front-office executive, pointing to the team's recent success under his leadership. Others, however, weren't buying what he was selling.

"You lose Myles Turner and add Zubac. You lose Mathurin and the number 5 pick with absolutely nothing in return. This is why fans are upset, for a center who's not even a top 5 center in the NBA. Who trades their future away for Ivica Zubac???" one frustrated fan wrote.

Another fan took aim at the strategy itself: "'We were due some luck' is a hell of a strategy."

But it wasn't all criticism. Several supporters praised Pritchard's willingness to own the mistake publicly—a rarity in today's sports landscape. "Respect for taking accountability publicly. Not many executives would openly admit the gamble didn't work out. The fans may be frustrated now, but building a team capable of competing at the highest level sometimes requires difficult risks," one commenter noted.

The move was a classic high-risk, high-reward play. The Pacers needed a starting-caliber center to compete in a stacked Eastern Conference, and Zubac fits that bill—even if he's not a top-five big man. The gamble was that the pick would land outside the top four, allowing Indiana to keep it. Instead, the lottery gods had other plans.

One fan summed up the sentiment of the optimists: "Scared money don't make no money. Bring home the chip KP."

In the end, this is a story about the fine line between bold moves and regret—and a reminder that in the NBA, sometimes you swing for the fences and strike out. But as Pritchard himself said, resilience has always been the Pacers' calling card.
