The league’s investigation remains ongoing.

Pablo Torre's Pulitzer Prize for audio reporting has reignited interest in one of the NBA's most controversial investigations: Did the Los Angeles Clippers secretly funnel money to superstar Kawhi Leonard in violation of the league's salary cap?

At the center of the story is Aspiration, a now-defunct financial company that signed Leonard to a four-year, $28 million marketing deal—despite the fact that the seven-time All-Star reportedly did little to no work for the brand. The twist? Clippers owner Steve Ballmer had invested $50 million in Aspiration just a year earlier, in 2021. The team also inked a massive $300 million sponsorship deal with the company, which ultimately filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2025.

“This is the defining scandal of Adam Silver's tenure as commissioner,” Torre told Front Office Sports back in September 2025, as the story first broke.

Ballmer has denied any knowledge of the endorsement deal, claiming he was “conned” by Aspiration and lost his entire $60 million investment. Leonard, too, has maintained his innocence, even publicly stating that he “invites” an NBA investigation into the matter.

The league launched a probe led by the law firm Wachtel, Lipton, Rosen & Katz—the same firm it has historically relied on for its most significant investigations. But despite the high stakes, the regular season came and went without any resolution. The investigation remains ongoing.

According to the NBA's Collective Bargaining Agreement, the Clippers could face severe penalties if found guilty of cap circumvention. These could include hefty fines, the forfeiture of draft picks, or even the voiding of Leonard's contract—a move that would send shockwaves through the league.

As fans and analysts alike wait for the NBA to take action, one question lingers: Will this be the scandal that defines Commissioner Silver's legacy, or will it quietly fade away like Aspiration itself?
