Christian Yelich is once again dealing with a frustrating setback, as the Milwaukee Brewers star finds himself sidelined with a back injury that flared up just as he was preparing to return to action. Speaking to reporters from Target Field on May 15—his third consecutive day out of the lineup—Yelich expressed his disappointment but offered few concrete updates on his recovery timeline.
"They kind of know how it works, so it's up to them on how they want to navigate and go about it," Yelich said, referring to the Brewers' medical staff. "There's a lot of things that they consider. A lot of that's going on. Just something we manage."
The injury occurred while Yelich was warming up for his first game back from the injured list earlier this week, after he had been sidelined for a month with an adductor strain. Rather than going on a rehab assignment, the Brewers opted to have him take live at-bats during practice to get him ready. Unfortunately, the back issue struck during that preparation, and Yelich went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts in his return game against the San Diego Padres.
Back problems have been a recurring challenge for Yelich throughout his nine seasons with Milwaukee. He underwent a season-ending discectomy in 2024 and managed to avoid significant issues last year, missing only five games in September due to the same problem. This latest flare-up, however, has put the team in a tough spot as they decide whether to place their designated hitter back on the injured list.
"Not great timing," Yelich admitted. "It's not a good feeling, but what are you going to do? It's sports. You try and get through it the best you can and go from there."
Brewers manager Pat Murphy indicated that the team hopes to reach a decision before the end of the weekend series in Minnesota. The challenge, however, lies in balancing the need to give Yelich proper recovery time with the risk of placing him on the IL only to have him ready to play within a day or two. For now, Yelich and the Brewers are taking it day by day, hoping for better timing and a smoother path forward.
