Oklahoma football has hired Mark Taurisani as deputy athletic director for sport administration, overseeing the program's operations.

The Oklahoma Sooners have made a significant addition to their athletic leadership, bringing in a seasoned football operations veteran to bolster their program's infrastructure. Mark Taurisani has been named deputy athletic director for sport administration, the university announced. In this key role, he will serve as the primary sport administrator for football, overseeing the team's daily operations while also managing critical areas like strength and conditioning, sport science, and student-athlete benefits—all designed to enhance the overall experience for Sooners athletes.

Taurisani arrives in Norman after a highly successful five-year stint at Illinois, where he most recently served as associate athletics director and chief of staff. During his tenure with the Fighting Illini, he was instrumental in the program's remarkable turnaround under head coach Bret Bielema. Illinois posted 37 wins during his time there, including back-to-back nine-win seasons and bowl victories in the 2024 Citrus Bowl and 2025 Music City Bowl. The team's 19 wins over the 2024 and 2025 seasons marked the most successful two-year stretch in program history, with Bielema setting school records for wins in a single season (10 in 2024) and total victories by a coach in his first five years.

The connection between Taurisani and Bielema runs deep—they have worked together for all 17 of Bielema's seasons as a head coach. In a heartfelt post on social media, Taurisani described Bielema as "more than a boss," calling him "a mentor and a friend through adversity, challenges and championships." Now, Taurisani will reunite with another familiar face: Oklahoma athletic director Roger Denny, who previously served as deputy athletic director at Illinois. This reunion brings a proven leadership dynamic to the Sooners' front office as they continue to build for the future.
