Oklahoma basketball's new home, the $1 billion Rock Creek Entertainment District, will officially break ground next week.

The Oklahoma Sooners are taking a monumental step forward in their athletic future. Next Tuesday marks the official groundbreaking for the Rock Creek Entertainment District, a transformative $1 billion project that will serve as the new home for OU basketball and gymnastics.

Set to take place on May 12, the ceremony will feature key speakers including The Rainier Companies CEO Danny Lovell and OU President Joseph Harroz Jr. The OU Foundation named Rainier as the master developer for this mixed-use district on April 14, signaling a major milestone for the program.

“It’s going to be incredible,” said Sooners athletic director Roger Denny. “All of a sudden, you can go for a game, and instead of sitting on Highway 9 for an hour trying to get out of there, you can go hang out and have a great meal or a drink in the district and have a good time.” This vision of a complete game-day experience is a game-changer for fans who have long endured post-game traffic headaches.

The journey to this point hasn't been without its hurdles. The Oklahoma Supreme Court ruled in February that a referendum petition challenging the project was insufficient, clearing the way for construction. OU officials and coaches have championed the initiative since its announcement in September 2023 at the Norman Economic Development Coalition's annual breakfast.

The Norman Planning Commission approved the project plan in June 2024, with then-athletic director Joe Castiglione, women's basketball coach Jennie Baranczyk, and women's gymnastics coach K.J. Kindler all voicing strong support. In October 2024, Harroz, joined by Castiglione and the coaches, unveiled a sign at the site marking "The Future Home of the Rock Creek Entertainment District."

The arena itself is expected to seat around 8,000 fans and will host the men's and women's basketball teams, as well as the women's gymnastics team. While initial projections targeted a 2027-28 completion, that timeline will likely be adjusted as construction gets underway. Despite the bumps along the road, this groundbreaking represents a new era for OU athletics—one where fans can enjoy a vibrant district long after the final buzzer sounds.
