In the high-stakes world of Formula 1, the driver-manager relationship can make or break a career. Oscar Piastri recently offered a rare glimpse into how his dynamic with legendary manager Mark Webber has matured since his rookie days—and the evolution is as fascinating as it is revealing.
As Piastri enters his fourth season on the grid, he's made strategic changes to his personal team. While Webber remains his manager, the nine-time Grand Prix winner has stepped back from his trackside role to focus on commercial matters. Stepping into the pit lane support are two familiar faces: Pedro Matos, Piastri's former Formula 2 race engineer at Prema in 2021, and Australian mental coach Emma Murray.
Speaking on the High Performance podcast, Piastri painted a vivid picture of how Webber's role has transformed. "When I first got into F1, Mark was coming up with questions and ideas that literally hadn't even entered my brain. I would hear him say it and go like, 'How the hell did he think of that?'" Piastri recalled with evident admiration.
The Australian driver's growth is palpable. "Now starting my fourth year, I have either the answers to a lot of those kinds of questions that I wouldn't have had in the first couple of years, or I know the questions to keep asking." It's a testament to how experience sharpens a driver's instincts—both on and off the track.
But Piastri was quick to acknowledge Webber's invaluable guidance during those early, turbulent years. "In the first couple of years, there are some lessons you have to learn the hard way. But I'm sure there could have been plenty of other slightly annoying, tougher lessons that I was probably spared because of Mark's experience and guidance."
The most telling insight? "There's probably always going to be situations or things that have gone smoothly—or almost problems that weren't problems—that I'm never going to know about because Mark managed them for me." It's the kind of behind-the-scenes work that separates good managers from great ones, and it's clearly shaping Piastri into a more complete competitor.
For fans and aspiring racers alike, this evolution highlights a crucial truth: even the most talented drivers need a trusted mentor to navigate the chaos of Formula 1. As Piastri continues to grow, his relationship with Webber serves as a masterclass in how to build a championship-winning mindset—one lap at a time.
