The Orlando Magic will have to face the Detroit Pistons in Sunday's decisive Game 7 without one of their key offensive weapons. Forward Franz Wagner has been officially ruled out, dealing a significant blow to the eighth-seeded Magic's hopes of upsetting the top-seeded Pistons.
Wagner sustained a calf strain during Game 4 of the series and has already missed the last two contests. The 24-year-old has battled injuries throughout the season, ultimately being limited to just 34 games during the regular campaign. When healthy, however, he has proven to be an integral piece of Orlando's success, finishing second on the team in scoring with 20.6 points per game and third in rebounds at 5.2 per game.
In the playoffs, Wagner has been a stat-sheet stuffer, averaging 16.8 points, 5.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and an impressive 2.8 steals per contest. His absence leaves a considerable void in the Magic's rotation, especially on the defensive end where his quick hands and basketball IQ have been invaluable.
It's been a roller-coaster series for Orlando, which once held a commanding 3-1 lead over the heavily favored Pistons. However, Detroit has stormed back with two dominant performances—including a suffocating defensive effort in Game 6—to force a winner-take-all Game 7. The Magic will now have to dig deep and find a way to close out the series without one of their most versatile players.
