The Baltimore Orioles finally put an end to their five-game losing streak Tuesday night, taking down the Miami Marlins 9-7 in a back-and-forth affair that showcased exactly what this offense is capable of when everything clicks.
The bats were the story of the night. Every time the Marlins clawed back, the Orioles answered with another knock. Pete Alonso and Samuel Basallo were absolutely electric, combining for a 5-for-7 performance with three doubles, a triple, two walks, five runs scored, and six RBIs. Basallo was a triple shy of the cycle and looked every bit the part of a rising star.
But the biggest moment came in the ninth inning. Despite Basallo's monster night, manager Craig Albernaz turned to Adley Rutschman off the bench—and it paid off in a big way. Rutschman delivered a go-ahead RBI single that put the game on ice and gave the dugout a much-needed jolt of energy.
Not everything was smooth, though. Colton Cowser struck out three more times, and Coby Mayo went 0-for-4 with a strikeout of his own. The organization is clearly trying to get both players going at the big league level, but nothing seems to be clicking. If there were an obvious alternate solution, it feels like the club would have made a move by now.
On the mound, Chris Bassitt struggled mightily. His command, especially on breaking pitches, was erratic, and he was fortunate to escape with just four runs allowed over four innings. His ERA now sits at 5.91. The Orioles didn't bring Bassitt in to be an ace, but with Trevor Rogers, Dean Kremer, and Zach Eflin all on the IL, they need more length and quality from the veteran right-hander.
Still, a win is a win. And at 16-20, the Orioles sit just one game back of the final AL Wild Card spot in what has been a brutal league so far. There's plenty of time to turn things around, and beating a similarly flawed Marlins team was a step in the right direction. Hopefully, they can keep the momentum going tonight.
