The Oregon Ducks softball team now finds itself in familiar territory—waiting and watching as their NCAA tournament fate hangs in the balance. After a thrilling but heartbreaking 11-9 loss to Wisconsin in the Big Ten tournament quarterfinals on May 7, the Ducks (40-12) will learn their postseason destination during Sunday's NCAA selection show at 4 p.m. on ESPN2.
In a game that had everything—20 runs, 24 hits, and seven home runs—Oregon simply couldn't slow down a relentless Wisconsin offense. The Badgers scored in every inning except the second, hammering out 15 hits including four home runs. Three times Wisconsin led off an inning with a homer, including a crucial seventh-inning shot from Hannah Conger that stretched their lead to 11-8.
Stefini Ma'ake did everything she could to keep the Ducks alive, launching two home runs and driving in five runs. Oregon showed tremendous fight, rallying from a 4-0 deficit to take a 5-4 lead in the second inning, then scoring three more in the fourth to go up 8-7. But Wisconsin answered every time, finally putting the game away with two runs in the seventh. Ma'ake's lead-off homer in the bottom of the seventh made it 11-9, but the Ducks couldn't mount another comeback.
This marks the second straight season Oregon has been bounced after just one game in the conference tournament despite being a top-two seed. But here's where the story gets interesting—the Ducks have been here before. Last season, they rebounded from an early Big Ten tournament exit to host an NCAA regional and super regional, ultimately earning a trip to the Women's College World Series.
"Any time something doesn't go our way, this group knows how to respond," head coach Melyssa Lombardi told GoDucks.com after the loss. "I expect them to fully respond and be ready to go for postseason. I love this group. I believe in this group. This group is really, really good."
With a 40-12 record and a resume that includes a run to the World Series last year, the Ducks have proven they can bounce back from adversity. The question now is whether they'll be hosting a regional again or hitting the road for the tournament. Either way, this team has shown it knows how to turn disappointment into motivation when it matters most.
