Manchester United are closing in on a midfield reinforcement that could prove to be a bargain in the coming transfer window. Serie A side Atalanta are preparing for the departure of their Brazilian midfielder Ederson, and there is growing optimism that a deal with the Red Devils will be finalized this summer.

The urgency for a midfield shake-up at Old Trafford is clear. Casemiro is heading for the exit, while doubts linger over Manuel Ugarte's long-term future. United need fresh legs and tactical versatility in the middle of the park, and Ederson fits the bill.

According to reports from Tuttomercatoweb, Manchester United are intent on making a move for the 26-year-old. While no formal offer has been submitted yet, confidence is building that he will end up at Old Trafford before the summer window closes. Atletico Madrid, who had agreed personal terms with Ederson in January, have eased their pursuit, and the player himself is reportedly more keen on a Premier League switch.

Atalanta are holding out for €50 million—a fee that United should have little trouble meeting, especially given their need to rebuild the midfield. The Italian side plans to reinvest the funds into their own engine room, with Maarten De Roon advancing in age.

While Ederson may not be a direct like-for-like replacement for Casemiro, his skill set offers something different and valuable. He is most effective as a number eight rather than a pure defensive midfielder, excelling at slowing the tempo, playing between the lines, beating the press, and popping up in advanced areas. That said, he can also slot in as a six, receiving the ball deep and progressing play forward.

In many ways, Ederson mirrors the attributes of Kobbie Mainoo—comfortable on the ball, intelligent in tight spaces, and capable of driving forward. His versatility was a key asset under Gian Piero Gasperini's system at Atalanta, where he often dropped into the backline to allow wing-backs to push forward. That experience has sharpened his game, and it's exactly the kind of adaptability that could make him a standout addition at Manchester United.
