As the summer transfer window approaches, FC Barcelona's squad for the 2026/27 season is taking shape, with some positions already locked in and others sparking intense competition. The full-back positions, in particular, are shaping up to be a battleground for starting spots.
In midfield, the picture is relatively clear. Dani Olmo, Pedri, Frenkie de Jong, Fermin Lopez, Gavi, and Marc Bernal are expected to remain as regulars, with Marc Casado the only possible departure. Barcelona doesn't plan to invest in midfield reinforcements, as Tommy Marques is likely to step in as Casado's replacement.
The attack, however, is set for changes. Marcus Rashford's purchase option likely won't be exercised, and both Robert Lewandowski and Roony Bardghji could be on their way out. A new center-forward is a priority signing.
Defensively, Barcelona aims to bring in a top-level center-back if conditions allow, with Alessandro Bastoni as the primary target. Andreas Christensen could be a candidate to leave, opening up more opportunities.
At full-back, the competition is fierce. Jules Kounde and Alejandro Balde are expected to stay unless substantial offers arrive, but that's just the beginning. Barcelona's priority is to secure Joao Cancelo's continuity, either by extending his loan from Al-Hilal or signing him permanently. Cancelo has earned Hansi Flick's trust and has even been preferred ahead of Balde in recent weeks.
On the left side, Balde, Cancelo, and Gerard Martin—who has been used as a center-back this season—will battle for the starting role. On the right, Hector Fort is set to return from his loan at Elche. The La Masia graduate suffered a shoulder injury just as he was finding his rhythm but is back for the final stretch of the season, ready to compete for minutes.
With so much talent vying for spots, Barcelona's full-back positions promise to be a highlight of the 2026/27 season, offering fans plenty of excitement and depth in defense.
