Only two Italian players remain in contention to win the UEFA Champions League this season—and one of them might surprise you.
Arsenal defender Riccardo Calafiori has already booked his spot in the 2025-26 Champions League Final after the Gunners edged past Atletico Madrid 2-1 on aggregate in the semi-finals. The 23-year-old is now one game away from joining an exclusive group of Italians who have lifted the trophy with a foreign club.
Historically, only five Italians have achieved this feat: Christian Panucci (Real Madrid, 1994 and 1998), Thiago Motta (Barcelona, 2006, plus Inter in 2010), Jorginho (Chelsea, 2021), Emerson Palmieri (Chelsea, 2021), and Gianluigi Donnarumma (PSG, 2025).
But Calafiori isn't the only Azzurri player with a shot at glory this season. Paris Saint-Germain, who face Bayern Munich in the second leg of their semi-final tonight (holding a 5-4 aggregate lead), have another Italian in their ranks: 19-year-old goalkeeper Renato Marin.
Born in São Paulo, Brazil, Marin holds an Italian passport and has represented Italy at the U19 level in 12 matches. The former Roma youth keeper joined PSG on a free transfer last summer and has made two senior appearances for the Ligue 1 giants this season. He currently serves as the club's third-choice goalkeeper.
For Italian football fans, this season's Champions League final could be a historic moment—adding two more names to that exclusive list of Italian winners abroad.
