Pittsburgh Pirates fans have a new name to celebrate alongside a legend. Outfielder Oneil Cruz has etched his name into franchise history, joining none other than Barry Bonds as the only two players in Pirates history to achieve a remarkable feat through the first 41 games of a season.
During Sunday's 7-6 loss to the San Francisco Giants, Cruz launched another home run and swiped a base, bringing his season totals to 10 homers and 15 RBIs. This performance placed him in elite company—only Bonds and Cruz have recorded at least 10 home runs and 10 stolen bases in the team's opening 41 games.
"It's an honor to be right next to a legend like Barry Bonds on those numbers," Cruz said through a translator after the game. "The work I put in during the offseason is paying off. Also being consistent, hard work and the gift that I got from God to hit the ball really hard. That's what it is."
Cruz's speed is making headlines across the league, too. He currently ranks third in MLB in stolen bases and has become just the third player since 1900 to hit 10 home runs and steal 15 bases before playing his 40th game of a season—a testament to his rare blend of power and agility.
While Cruz's individual performance shined, the Pirates couldn't secure the win, dropping the three-game series to the Giants and falling to 22-19 on the season. But with a home stand against the Colorado Rockies starting Tuesday, Pittsburgh has a chance to bounce back.
For a young star like Cruz, this milestone is just the beginning. As he continues to develop his all-around game, Pirates fans have plenty of reasons to be excited—and maybe even shop for a Cruz jersey to commemorate his historic start.
