A fun battle to watch.

Every NFL training camp brings its share of position battles, but this offseason, one of the most intriguing competitions for the New Orleans Saints won't be at quarterback or wide receiver—it'll be on special teams.

Last year, all eyes were on the QB showdown between Tyler Shough and Spencer Rattler. This year, the Saints' roster is looking more settled at the skill positions, shifting the spotlight to depth battles and, most critically, the kicking game. And let's be honest: after last season's special teams performance, a shake-up was long overdue.

The 2025 campaign was a rollercoaster for New Orleans' special teams unit. While Charlie Smyth provided some late-season highlights, the overall picture was far from pretty. Blake Grupe's missed field goals proved costly in multiple close games. The punting game consistently handed opponents favorable field position. The return game lacked spark, and the coverage teams were a glaring weakness. In short, it was a complete overhaul situation—and the Saints front office clearly agreed.

This offseason, they've already made some smart moves. Signing proven punter Ryan Wright adds stability to the kicking game. Drafting explosive return man Barion Brown should inject life into the return unit. And selecting Lorenzo Styles Jr. upgrades the coverage teams. It's a solid foundation for a turnaround, but the biggest question remains: who will be the kicker?

Smyth showed flashes of promise down the stretch, but consistency was an issue. He missed several makeable kicks, which is understandable for a rookie adjusting to the NFL game, but not enough to lock down the starting job long-term. The Saints need a kicker they can count on in crunch time. That's why they've brought in competition: Texas kicker Mason Shipley and veteran Younghoe Koo, who will attend rookie minicamp.

The Saints had a kicker battle last season, but this year's version feels different. It's not just about finding a leg—it's about finding a reliable game-changer. And for a team looking to climb back into contention, that might be the most important battle of all.
