Every now and then, football throws up a moment so unexpected it becomes the stuff of legend. As Manchester City prepare to host Crystal Palace at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday night, we're taking a trip down memory lane to a clash that featured one of the most remarkable individual performances in the club's history.

Back in May 1989, with both sides chasing promotion to the top flight, Palace arrived at Maine Road for a high-stakes showdown. City sat second in the table, desperately trying to hold off the Londoners for the final promotion spot, while Palace boasted the formidable attacking duo of Ian Wright and Mark Bright.

The atmosphere was electric, and it only intensified when Nigel Gleghorn fired City into the lead in the eighth minute. But when the teams emerged for the second half, a stunned silence fell over the stadium. Gleghorn was now wearing the goalkeeper's jersey.

In an era before substitute goalkeepers were a luxury on the bench, Andy Dibble had aggravated an earlier injury, leaving City in a bind. Step forward Gleghorn, who volunteered to take the gloves against one of the most dangerous strike forces in the division.

What followed was nothing short of heroic. Gleghorn made a series of sharp saves and confidently collected crosses, keeping Palace at bay and his teammates in the game. He was finally beaten by a fierce Wright strike with 15 minutes remaining, but City held on for a vital 1-1 draw—a point that proved crucial in the promotion race.

"It was an experience I have to say," Gleghorn recalled. "To play in front of that sort of crowd in that big a game was just mind-blowing. I don't think you can describe how you feel. You feel comfortable enough when you're in your own position, but when you're thrust into a position like that..."

It's a story that captures the spirit of football—the willingness to step up when your team needs you most. And as City prepare to face Palace once again, it's a reminder that some of the game's greatest moments come from the most unexpected places.
