The Dallas Cowboys' secondary is undergoing a major shakeup, and one young defender is feeling the heat to prove he belongs. After a 2025 season where the Cowboys' defense ranked 31st in yards per play (6.1) and struggled mightily against opposing quarterbacks, changes were inevitable. Now, second-year cornerback Shavon Revel Jr. finds himself in a make-or-break season, fighting to keep his starting spot.
Revel, a third-round pick from East Carolina in the 2025 NFL Draft, played in just seven games during his rookie campaign. It was a rocky start, and it was clear he wasn't fully recovered from the injury that caused him to fall to Day 2 of the draft. But with a full offseason now under his belt, Revel hopes to show he's back to his pre-injury form. However, the competition in the Cowboys' defensive back room is fiercer than ever.
The team has invested heavily in revamping the secondary this offseason. Veteran cornerback Cobie Durant was signed to a one-year deal, bringing a wealth of starting experience on the outside. The Cowboys also used a fourth-round pick in the 2026 NFL Draft on Florida's Devin Moore, with executive Will McClay hinting at big plans for the rookie—if he can stay healthy. And that's not all: Derion Kendrick, Caelen Carson, Josh Butler, and Trikweze Bridges are all waiting in the wings for their chance.
Revel was originally drafted with Matt Eberflus' defensive scheme in mind, but new defensive coordinator Christian Parker may have different ideas about who should start opposite DaRon Bland. While the Cowboys aren't ready to give up on their third-round pick, the depth chart is no longer a given. Unlike previous seasons, Dallas could adopt a week-to-week approach at the third cornerback position in 2026, meaning Revel will need to prove his value every single game.
For a player with so much promise coming out of East Carolina, this is the season to show he belongs—or risk being left behind in a suddenly crowded room.
