Just two years ago, the Lincoln High School softball program was on life support. Without enough players to field a team, the Lions faced a stark reality: co-op with another school or cancel the season. They joined forces with North Providence, a temporary fix to keep their spirit alive. Today, that story has flipped completely. Following a decisive 12-8 victory over Barrington, Lincoln stands undefeated at 6-0, transforming from a survival story into a legitimate Division II title contender.
This remarkable turnaround is powered by one of the youngest rosters in the state, a group playing with a fearlessness that belies their age. At the heart of their surge is freshman pitcher Molly Ganim, a talent long anticipated in the Lincoln community. Ganim, who led her middle school team to a state semifinal last year, has seamlessly transitioned to the high school diamond, delivering dominant performances that have anchored the Lions' perfect start.
The team's rapid ascent has even surprised its leaders. "I was not expecting it," admitted sophomore captain Brooke Tillson. "I knew we had a good group coming in, but... I did not expect this." Head coach Alyssa McCoart points to a revitalized pipeline as the key to sustainable success. "This year we have a lot of freshmen that came into the program and have a lot of girls at the middle school as well," McCoart said, highlighting the importance of building a strong feeder system.
Lincoln's current success harkens back to its glory days as a state powerhouse, which included back-to-back championships in 2012 and 2013. The subsequent decline in participation, exacerbated by the pandemic, makes this resurgence all the more dramatic. What was once a necessary "Band-Aid"—the co-op with North Providence—has now healed into a program bursting with confidence and talent.
For a team that recently couldn't find nine players, every win now is a statement. The Lions aren't just participating; they're dominating, proving that with strong community support, young talent, and resilient leadership, a program can rise from its lowest point to aim for its highest heights. Their journey from the brink of extinction to the top of the standings is the kind of comeback story that defines sports, and they're just getting started.
