Olympian Ryan Lochte has been turning heads for more than just his career change—his latest look has fans doing a double take. The 12-time Olympic medalist debuted a fresh, darker, and curlier hairstyle in a recent Instagram video, and the internet had plenty to say about it.
"Literally does not look like him," one fan commented. "Plot twist this is the Greek version of Ryan," another chimed in. A third simply wrote, "Would not have recognized him."
While his new appearance sparked plenty of buzz, Lochte also dropped a major career update. The six-time Olympic gold medalist is trading his goggles for a stopwatch as he steps into the role of assistant coach for the Division I men's and women's swim team at Missouri State University. It's a natural next step for the swimming legend, who's spent decades perfecting his craft at the highest level.
"After spending half my life staring at the black line at the bottom of a pool, I figured it was time to help the next generation do the same thing," Lochte said in the May 10 video. "Swimming gave me an incredible career, memories, things I will cherish forever, but over the last couple of years, something so unexpected happened."
He added, "I might actually be more passionate about coaching than competing. Don't get me wrong, I had a pretty good swimming career, but honestly, I think I might even be a better swim coach."
Lochte assured fans that his signature energy isn't going anywhere. "So I traded in my goggles for a stopwatch and I'm not gonna lie, it looks pretty good on me," he said. He promised to keep saying his iconic "Jeah!" catchphrase and "will still over-celebrate" as an assistant coach. "And yes, there might be way too much energy on pool day, but that's okay," he added with a grin.
His girlfriend, Molly Gillihan, has been cheering him on from the sidelines, writing, "I love" under the announcement post.
For fans who've followed Lochte's decorated career—from his Olympic triumphs to his signature flair—this new chapter feels like a perfect fit. Whether he's rocking a new hairstyle or a new job title, one thing's for sure: Ryan Lochte is still making waves.
